A bicyclist suffered fatal injuries in a southwest Miami-Dade hit-and-run accident on the morning of Tuesday, May 4.
According to the details shared by the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash took place along 200th Street, close to Southwest 172nd Avenue. It involved the bicyclist and one other vehicle. The vehicle was identified by FHP as a Maserati.
The bicyclist was traveling eastbound along 200th Street when the collision took place. The Maserati, which was also traveling eastbound along the street, collided with the bicycle. The sheer impact of the collision caused critical injuries to the bicyclist.
Once the crash was called in and paramedics reached the scene of the crash, attempts were made to revive the bicyclist but these failed. The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
The driver of the Maserati didn’t stop at the crash site and instead fled. However, the driver stopped only about half a mile from the scene of the collision. FHP troopers were able to locate the vehicle and took the driver into custody.
Following the Miami-Dade hit-and-run, authorities closed a section of 200th Street to traffic. This was done as on-site investigations and cleanup was being conducted. The roadway remained closed for several hours before it was reopened to traffic.
FHP has not released the identity of the deceased bicyclist. It is expected that the identification details of the victim will be released once the next-of-kin have been notified. Authorities have also not named the Maserati driver. It remains to be seen if any formal charges will be filed against the driver.
Even if the driver was not negligent in the crash, fleeing the scene may result in formal charges. The family and survivors of the bicyclist can seek compensatory damages with the help of a Miami wrongful death lawyer.
