Vertebral Fractures

Vertebral Fractures

Fracturing a vertebra within your spine can be excruciatingly painful and nerve injury is common. Vertebral fractures often result from blunt trauma when a high impact force strikes the back along the spine, causing injury to the vertebra inside. Severe car accidents are one of the number one causes of vertebral fractures, while falls, workplace injuries, and sports injuries inflict a number of these injuries as well.

Vertebral Fracture Defined

Vertebral fractures can occur in the cervical, thoracic, lumber, or sacral spine. A vertebral fracture involves a break in the cortex of the bone, leaving the bone in more than one piece. Any part of the vertebra can be fractured and every break will be unique, fracturing in different patterns and resulting in varying degrees of spine instability.

The greatest complication of a vertebral fracture is injury to the spinal cord. Fractured vertebra can damage the spinal cord, leading to potentially permanent paralysis. Quadriplegia and paraplegia are common complications that can result from a serious vertebral fracture. Prompt emergency medical care may help reduce the risk of such complications.

Symptoms of a Vertebral Fracture

If you have been involved in a major car accident, sports injury, or fall, it is important to know the symptoms of a vertebral fracture so that you can obtain the medical attention you need. Potential symptoms will vary depending upon the severity of the injury. Minor compression fractures may cause only pain, a lack of mobility, and muscle spasms. More serious injuries suggestive of unstable vertebral fractures which may impact nerve roots or the spinal cord include:

  • Pain in the back or neck;
  • Tingling below the level of the injury;
  • Numbness below the level of the injury;
  • Paralysis below the injury site;
  • Muscle spasms near the injury site; and
  • Bladder or bowel difficulties
Medical Care for a Vertebral Fracture

A vertebral fracture is a medical emergency that must be treated promptly. Most vertebral fractures can be diagnosed using an x-ray. A CT scan or MRI will allow for a closer view if necessary. Anyone suspected of a vertebral fracture should be safely immobilized to prevent further injury to the spine. Some patients will require surgery, while others with minor injuries may not. High dose steroids may help to reduce the swelling in the spine. Recovery time for a vertebral fracture can be quite long and may include the need for at home care and physical therapy.
