A head-on collision near Polk City in Polk County between two vehicles resulted in the death of one person. The fatal crash occurred earlier this week on the afternoon of Friday, July 2. The head-on collision near Polk City was reported to the authorities at around 3:15 p.m.
According to the details shared by the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident took place close to the Evergreen Boulevard on Commonwealth Avenue. One of the vehicles involved in the crash was traveling northbound along the Avenue. The second vehicle was headed southbound.
As both vehicles neared each other at the Evergreen Boulevard, the southbound vehicle’s driver veered to a side for unknown reasons. The southbound vehicle then crossed the centerline and came into the path of the oncoming traffic. This was when the vehicle crashed into the northbound vehicle.
The driver of the northbound vehicle was identified as Angel Cano, 59. A second occupant of the vehicle was identified as Geisha Machado Carranza, 49. Cano suffered critical injuries in the collision. By the time the first responders arrived, he had passed away. He was pronounced deceased on the scene of the crash.
Carranza suffered serious injuries in the collision. EMS transported her to an area hospital for treatment of a broken leg as well as other internal injuries.
The driver of the southbound vehicle which caused the wrong-way collision was identified as Nicolas Roldan, 39. Roldan suffered minor injuries and was also transported to a hospital for treatment.
The Traffic Homicide Unit of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the crash. The focus of the investigations is to determine why Roldan veered into the northbound lanes. For now, no formal charges have been filed.
