A two-vehicle accident in Volusia County resulted in the death of two persons. The fatal Volusia County crash occurred on the night of Friday, May 14. It was reported to the authorities at around 11:15 p.m.
According to the details shared by the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident took place on State Road 415. One of the vehicles involved in the collision was identified as a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The other was a 2002 Chevy Pickup Truck. The two vehicles collided with each other close to Crestview Drive.
Investigations by FHP have revealed that the Hyundai was traveling the wrong-way in the southbound lanes of the road. This brought the vehicle into the path of the oncoming traffic. The Hyundai then crashed into the southbound Chevy Truck at a high rate of speed.
The sheer impact of the collision caused serious damage to both vehicles. The drivers of both vehicles also suffered critical injuries. Once the crash was called in, paramedics and first responders rushed to the crash site. However, both drivers succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced deceased on the scene of the accident.
FHP has not yet released the names of the victims. It is expected that the names will be released once the next-of-kin have been notified. However, FHP did confirm that the driver of the wrong-way Hyundai was a female aged 22 from New Smyrna Beach. The Chevy driver was identified only as a 54-year-old man from Deltona.
Authorities continue to investigate the Volusia County crash. The focus of the investigations at this point is to determine what caused the Hyundai driver to operate the vehicle in the wrong-way lanes. FHP has not ruled out impaired driving and speeding as contributing factors.
