One person was killed in a two-vehicle crash on SR-29 in LaBelle. The fatal incident happened on the afternoon of Friday, February 26. The deceased has not been identified as of yet.
According to the details shared by the Florida Highway Patrol, the accident involved a collision between two vans. The collision happened at the intersection of the State Road 29 and A Road. The precise location of the accident was just south of the Helms Road in LaBelle.
FHP has not revealed the names of any of the persons involved. The authorities did identify the driver of one of the vans as a 61-year-old LaBelle man. Preliminary investigations show that this driver was in a violation of the right-of-way when his van crashed into a second van.
The driver of the second van was identified as a 50-year-old man. This van had a second occupant in it, a 28-year-old passenger who was in his wheelchair at the time of the accident.
During the collision at the intersection, the second van with its two occupants crashed into the left side of the first van. The impact of the collision pushed the second van into the west side guardrail of SR-29.
The two-vehicle crash on SR-29 caused the 28-year-old man in a wheelchair to sustain critical injuries. By the time the first responders and paramedics reached the scene of the crash, the man had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The drivers of both vans also suffered serious injuries in the accident. Both were transported to a hospital for emergency treatment. Following the crash, authorities shut down both the southbound and northbound lanes of the SR-29. This was done so that on-site investigations and cleanup could be conducted. It is expected that FHP will reveal the name of the deceased victim once the next-of-kin have been notified.
