A tractor trailer overturned by the roadside as a result of a multi-vehicle crash on Florida Turnpike on Wednesday, January 13. As the vehicle rolled over, its driver got stuck inside.
According to the details shared by the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred early on Wednesday morning. It was reported at around 5:30 a.m. The accident involved multiple vehicles although it isn’t known yet exactly how it came about.
All the vehicles involved in the crash on Florida Turnpike were traveling in the southbound lanes of the road. The collision happened close to NW 106th Street in Hialeah. Once the first responders and paramedics reached the scene of the crash, attempts were made to help the injured parties.
These attempts proved particularly difficult in the case of the tractor trailer. The driver of the trailer had gotten stuck inside the vehicle after it had overturned. FHP troopers and multiple Fire-Rescue units from Miami-Dade spent a considerable time trying to free the stuck driver from the vehicle. The rescue units included an MDFR Technical Rescue Team.
According to MDFR, as the efforts to rescue the stuck driver were ongoing, a trauma surgeon from a trauma center facility located close by was contacted by the authorities. The surgeon was flown to the crash scene in case emergency help was required. It isn’t clear if the surgeon did play any role in having the driver freed from the vehicle.
Once the driver had been retrieved from the vehicle, he was airlifted to the trauma center for further treatment. His injuries, as well as those of others injured in the crash, are reported as non-critical.
Following the crash, authorities shut down the southbound lanes of the Florida Turnpike for several hours. The crash remains under investigation by FHP.
