A Key Largo collision between a motorcycle and an SUV resulted in the death of three persons. The crash occurred close to the mile marker 96.
According to the details shared by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the accident took place on Saturday, January 16. It happened at night and was reported to the authorities at around 7 p.m.
The crash came about when a motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed crashed into an SUV. The SUV was identified as a Buick Enclave. The Buick was trying to enter into the Buttonwood Bay condos at the time and was in the process of taking a left turn across the southbound lanes of the U.S. 1.
The motorcycle involved in the incident was traveling southbound on the U.S. 1 at the time. It was accompanied by a sports bike. As the Buick was taking a left turn, the motorcycle collided with the car. The sheer impact of the collision caused the Buick to overturn. The motorcycle rider sustained critical injuries in the crash and was later pronounced dead on the scene.
The Buick Enclave caught fire after overturning. Witnesses close to the crash scene tried to rescue the occupants of the vehicle. However, the vehicle became engulfed in flames and any attempts to help out the victims failed. By the time the first responders and paramedics reached the scene of the crash, the Buick’s occupants had succumbed to severe injuries and died.
Following the Key Largo collision, local and state authorities responded. These included the Florida Highway Patrol. Traffic on both sides of the highway was backed up while authorities conducted on-site investigations and cleanup. It isn’t clear whether the other motorcycle rider stopped at the scene of the crash or fled. If the rider fled, formal charges may be brought.
